studio portrait

My inspiration has long been environments, both external and internal. There is an interaction between the two that is of constant interest to me. I spend my time walking, feeling, photographing and sketching, trying to absorb my place in the landscape. No light, weather, texture, wind, feeling, mood or day is ever the same.

I then return to the studio and start work. My paintings are in the main semi-abstract. I try to capture the feeling and atmosphere of the occasion as well as the salient physical detail. The result, I hope, gives the viewer the structural bones of the experience but there are gaps that imagination can fill.

This is primarily a solitary process as I work from my studio at home. To work with others around is very different. We influence each other in ways that are not visible, that is not until they appear within the work. What happens along these boundaries can be very exciting.
